Singapore Medical Leave (MC) and Hospitalisation Leave (HL) share one statutory sick leave entitlement. StaffAny creates and migrates them together as a linked pair.
This guide will cover the following:
Leave Eligibility & Entitlement
Eligibility
Generally, employees are entitled to paid outpatient and hospitalization leave if:
They have worked for at least 3 months.
They have attempted to inform the employer within 48 hours of absence.
(For medical leave) They were certified unfit to work by a registered medical practitioner
(For hospitalization leave) They were warded, quarantined by law, or certified by a medical practitioner who can admit patients into an approved hospital
Annual entitlement
14 Days of Medical Leave (Paid Outpatient Sick Leave)
60 Days of Hospitalization Leave (Paid Hospitalization Sick Leave)
This entitlement is inclusive of the 14 Days of medical leave. For a staff member with the full 14-day MC and 60-day HL entitlement, MC taken reduces both balances. HL taken reduces HL; the amount above 46 days also reduces MC. For example, after 2 MC days, 12 MC and 58 HL days remain. If the staff member then takes 47 HL days, 11 MC days remain (12 - (47 - 46)), and 11 HL days remain (58 - 47). This example assumes no adjustments or carried-forward days.
Prorated entitlement
For new joiners, their sick leave entitlement will be prorated based on how long they have been working for the company.
The example below shows the prorated entitlement for an employee who starts work on 13 February 2023. Between 13 February to 12 May 2023, any sick leave taken will be unpaid.
Note: Sick leave entitlement remains at 14/60 after the 6th month onwards, but entitlement (regardless of proration) only refreshes at the start of each year (1st Jan). I.e. If 1st Jan happens to be the 5th working month of staff, staff will have 11/45 balances on 1st Jan, and receive more entitlement (14/60) once the 6th-month mark is hit.
Refer MOM’s website for a detailed description of sick leave (both Medical & Hospitalization leaves) eligibility and entitlement.
Create the linked MC and HL pair
Go to Settings > Off and Leave > Leave Types and select Add Leave.
Enter the first leave type’s Leave Name and Leave Tag. Choose Medical or Hospitalisation as the Leave Template, then select Next.
Review its settings and select Save. StaffAny opens a prompt to create the other leave type. The first leave type is not saved yet.
Select Continue. Enter the paired leave type’s name and tag, select Next, review its settings, and select Save. StaffAny creates and links both types together.
Start with either MC or HL; StaffAny takes you directly to the other type. The second type inherits shared settings, including Prioritize Leave Calculation Date, from the first.
Migrate existing leave types to the linked pair
If your organisation already has regular leave types for MC and HL, migrate both in one flow:
Go to Settings > Off and Leave > Leave Types and select Migrate Leave under Migrate Statutory Leave.
Choose Medical & Hospitalisation Leave Types. Select one eligible existing type for Medical Leave and a different type for Hospitalisation Leave, then select Next.
Review the Medical leave name, tag and settings, then select Next.
Review the Hospitalisation leave and select Save.
In the confirmation, download the current balances CSV, read the impact, acknowledge it, and select Save to migrate both types together.
Before you confirm: Leave already taken and staff tagged to the selected types are retained. Existing leave adjustments are removed, balances are reset and recalculated under the statutory linked setup, and the change cannot be reversed to regular leave types. Review the balance export and both selected types carefully.
Read the linked balance
Open a staff member’s MC or HL balance breakdown to see the linked type under Shared Entitlement. Leave taken from the linked type appears as a deduction under Base Earned Till Date. The remaining linked balance is used for leave applications, approvals, and assignments, and is reflected in balance exports and leave transactions.
Deleting a pair: Deleting either MC or HL also deletes its linked type and related leave data. The confirmation identifies both types and asks you to acknowledge the impact. Review the leave history and timesheet implications before confirming.
