In Singapore, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) provides guidelines for some popular leave types, including Medical and Hospitalization leaves.

In StaffAny, we have introduced a new leave template that helps you set up the accrual system according to MOM’s guidelines, ensuring that you follow the leave eligibility and entitlement!

This guide will cover the following:

Leave Eligibility & Entitlement

Eligibility

Generally, employees are entitled to paid outpatient and hospitalization leave if:

  1. They have worked for at least 3 months.

  2. They have attempted to inform the employer within 48 hours of absence.

  3. (For medical leave) They were certified unfit to work by a registered medical practitioner

  4. (For hospitalization leave) They were warded, quarantined by law, or certified by a medical practitioner who can admit patients into an approved hospital

Annual entitlement

  1. 14 Days of Medical Leave (Paid Outpatient Sick Leave)

  2. 60 Days of Hospitalization Leave (Paid Hospitalization Sick Leave)

    1. This entitlement is inclusive of the 14 Days of medical leave.

    2. This means that if an employee has already consumed 14 days of medical leave, they are only entitled to an additional 46 days of hospitalization leave. Similarly, an employee who has already taken 50 days of hospitalization leave will be left with 10 days of medical leave.

Prorated entitlement

For new joiners, their sick leave entitlement will be prorated based on how long they have been working for the company.

The example below shows the prorated entitlement for an employee who starts work on 13 February 2023. Between 13 February to 12 May 2023, any sick leave taken will be unpaid.

Note: Sick leave entitlement remains at 14/60 after the 6th month onwards, but entitlement (regardless of proration) only refreshes at the start of each year (1st Jan). I.e. If 1st Jan happens to be the 5th working month of staff, staff will have 11/45 balances on 1st Jan, and receive more entitlement (14/60) once the 6th-month mark is hit.

Refer MOM’s website for a detailed description of sick leave (both Medical & Hospitalization leaves) eligibility and entitlement.

Migrate existing leave types to Medical & Hospitalisation Leave

If you have already implemented Medical/Hospitalisation Leave in our system using a regular leave type, you can easily migrate them so your accrual system matches the Singapore MOM’s Medical/Hospitalisation Leave Format.

There are two methods to do this:

  1. Migration banner

  2. Edit Leave Type
